2Capstone Proposal - Reducing Nurse BurnoutNurse burnout is a problem that effects many Registered Nurses (RNs) in the United States. Rates of RN burnout vary, but some studies put the number as high as 70% (Lyndon, 2015). That can mean that over 2.1 million nurses are affected by burnout, if we consider that there are 3,059,800 RN’s working in the United States (US Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2020). Burnout can cause the affected RN to become cynical, and detached from others, and allow them depersonalize colleagues and patients alike (Paul, et al, 2018). As time passes, the RN experiencing burnout becomes ineffective at work, and loses the ability to contribute to their patients, and to their unit (Paul, et al, 2018). The number of RNs in the United States is estimated to increase 12% from 2018 – 2028 (US Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2020). However, it is estimated that (as of 2020) approximately 80,000 experienced RNs leave the workforce each year (Rosseter, 2019). While some of those RNs have likely reached retirement age – nearly 51% of American RN’s are over 50-years old according to Rosseter (2019) - based on the RN burnout rate, it is possible that many of those nurses are suffering from burnout. The purpose of this writing is to propose a quality improvement plan which will allow forearly intervention in the process of nurse burnout. The earliest intervention that nurses can receive about their potential for burnout is through education on the subject. This proposal aims to show that educating nurses on the problem of burnout, and ways to reduce burnout, can lower their perceived feelings of being burned out.PICOTIn the acute-care setting, what is the effect of providing Registered Nurses (RN's) with education on the reduction of 'nurse burnout', in comparison to not providing education about
3'nurse burnout', on subjective 'nurse burnout' symptoms? This question allows one to create a short form study which can help to identify whether education on burnout is an effective measurewhich can be utilized to reduce the incidence of burnout among inpatient nursing staff. If it is determined that educating nurses on the facts of burnout (as well as reduction techniques) can reduce perceived burnout, then the sessions can be expanded and utilized on a regular basis as a prophylactic technique against burnout.Nurse burnout can be defined as the state of physical and emotional exhaustion caused bythe RN being so overwhelmed by work that they feel lethargic, unable to face the demands of thejob, and the inability to meaningfully connect with patients and peers (Paul, et al, 2018). Acute care RN’s are just as vulnerable to burnout as any other type of RN. One could argue that their role – dealing with acutely ill/injured/hospitalized patients – may make them more susceptible to burnout.
