Phys5523 Theory of Relativity Lecturer: Daniel Kennefick Office: Physics Room 237 Phone: (479) 575-6784 E-mail: [email protected] Class website: http://dafix.uark.edu/~danielk/Relativity/class.html Classes: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 to 10:20 am in Bell Engineering room 2291 Office Hours: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 am to 11:30 am in Physics Room 237 Course Description: The course will discuss the special and general theories of relativity from the standpoint of the study of gravitation, with special emphasis on astrophysical applications. Course Text: Gravity: An Introduction to Einstein’s General Relativity by James B. Hartle (Addison- Wedley, 2003) Grading : the course will be graded 75% by exams and tests and 25% by homework and classwork. Grading Scale: A 85%-100% B 70%-84% C 55%-69% D 40%-54% F 0%-39% Tests: There will be three tests in the course. The first (on the material in part I of the textbook, plus the first two chapters of Part II) will cover relativity in flat spacetime (i.e. special relativity) and nearly flat spacetime (i.e. something closely approximating Newtonian gravity), as well as the metric
