Karen Sanchez Astronomy 104 Professor Wilcots TA Kelley DIS 404 21 September 2010 Homework 1 1. a) The combination of Earth’s axial tilt and its annual path around the Sun creates the seasons. Because the Earth is inclined at an angle of 23.5 degrees to the plane of its orbit, and because the direction of the inclination doesn’t alter as the Earth rotates around the Sun, it is tilted towards and away from the Sun at different parts of the year. In the Northern Hemisphere, an object north of the celestial equation can be seen over the horizon for more than half of the time (which means the days are more than 12 hours). This occurs when the Earth’s North Pole is tilted toward the sun and over half of Earth’s Northern Hemisphere is illuminated by sunlight (long summer days). When the North Pole is tilted away from the Sun six months later, the polar opposite occurs and there are short winter days in the Northern Hemisphere. When the Southern Hemisphere’s days are long (December- South Pole tilted toward Sun), the Northern Hemisphere’s days are short (North Pole tilted away from Sun). The length of the days are reversed for the polar hemispheres due to the 23.5 degree tilt of Earth’s axis. b) The northernmost latitude at which the Sun appears to be directly overhead is summer solstice, June 21. On this day, the Northern Hemisphere begins its summer, enjoying the longest day of the year. As Earth moves on its axis around the Sun, it heads for nearer alignment with the
