Fall 2010 ECON 1010 SAMPLE: Critic Review Chapter 4 Freakeconomics 1. According to the authors where have all the criminal gone? In “Freakonomics” the authors are discussing the significant drop in crime in the early 1990’s in America. The authors discuss many points including; innovative policing strategies, increased reliance on prisons, changes in crack and other drug markets, and aging of the population. After discussing the main points in the chapter, they go on to explain that the drastic drop in the crime rate in the early 90’s was caused by legalization of abortion in the 1973 Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade. This decision extended legalized abortion to all the states. The explanation the authors give is that when mothers are not allowed to have abortions they are more likely to mistreat their children. This may be because the mother is upset, mentally ill, and ill equipped to handle raising children, or a slew of other possibilities. Because of this these children, who would have normally been aborted, have problems growing up that lead them to
