Family life and the various rules that go along with it are crucial to survival. Families are allowed one child. Punishment is given if a second is born, but if a third is born, it is immediately killed. Many people see this as a brutal, inhuman practice, however, as explained in the movie, it is a means to survival. When the Guarani travel, oftentimes quickly to escape capture, they can only carry one child. As well as the rules, however, the family life itself is important to them. Family ties truly bind the communities together, and the labor that each member gives to the community shapes the society and keeps it running. I really liked this movie- it exposed me to a completely different culture....
