April 15, 2011 Exam 2 Physics 1025 MDC-IAC Name_____________________ 1) (25pts.) A shot putter throws a 10kg shot at a 45 o angle upward with a two-dimensional velocity of 20( 2) m/s. The shot leaves his hand at a height of 2.5m and takes a projectile path before landing on a spring platform that recoils into the ground in the vertical direction. Uncompressed the platform is at ground level and has a spring constant of 1000N/m. (Cos45 o = Sin45 o = (1/ 2), g = 10 m/s 2 ) a. Calculate the Potential Energy of the shot at its maximum height. b. Calculate the Total Energy of the shot at its maximum height. c. Calculate the Total Energy of the shot just before hitting the spring. d. Use the Hook’s Law and the Conservation of Energy Law to predict how much the spring will compress ( y) following impact with the shot. e. Explain why the Spring Potential Energy is not equal to the Total Energy and then calculate the Total Energy of the shot while it is sitting on the fully compressed spring. 45 o ± = 20( 2)m/s 5.0m 5.0m
