Bioinformatics Exercise Due 20 October 2011 Pick one of the following genes that have a disease-causing allele. Presenilin 1 (Alzheimer’s, PSEN1) Sickle cell anemia (HbB, hemoglobin) Cystic fibrosis (CFTR) 1. You must first download the Cn3D viewer program. This is fast and easy: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Structure/CN3D/cn3d.shtml PC and Unix users should be able to view the structure within their browsers, but refer to the help page for questions. Be aware if you are a Macintosh user like me, you will have to download the structure file(s) and then drop them onto the Cn3D viewer program or else use the “open” commend in Cn3D. 2. Search for your gene in the search box of the Entrez page found here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/gquery 3. Click on the SNP category in the left hand box and look for non-synonymous SNPs in coding regions that can be mapped to the structure by using the “limits” screen as you learned in the workshop. For presenilin 1, pick rs28930977 For sickle cell, pick rs77121243 For cystic fibrosis, pick rs113993959 You will want to return to this window often, so for the next few steps, please either right-click (PC users) or control-click (Mac users) so that you
