Fran Hayden Joins Dairy Engineering – Case Analysis 2- Summit Puri Situation: A recent graduate from the University of Waikato, Fran Hayden was excited to begin her career in the corporate world. She knew that this job wasn’t an ideal job for her, but she would gain some much needed experience, a higher starting salary compared to the industry average and it would look great on her resume to have experience from such a large firm. The company is Dairy Engineering, located in Hamilton, New Zealand and with manufacturing plants in South Auckland and Christchurch. They manufacture equipment that is used in the dairy industry and has recently, over the last five years, expanded into the export market. Management includes Rob Poor the chief accountant, Vernon Moore the Chief cost accountant and Peter Bruton the Management accountant. Fran applied for a position and a couple weeks later she was requested to come in for an interview with the chief accountant. At the end of the interview, she was offered the position but chose to think it through before she committed to the company. Two weeks go by and Rob Poor, the chief accountant, calls Fran and asks her if she was going to take the position. Fran decided to take the job. On her first day she reports to the accounting department only to find out that no one was expecting her. She also found out later that there were no vacancies for her hired position in cost accounting. She was then re-assigned to Management Information Systems (MIS). Fran’s duties included photocopying, collating, binding, punching and stamping the pages of the monthly management report known as “big brother”. She constantly found herself with extra time on her hands and felt that the number of people working in the department exceeded the amount of
