Span of control refers to the number of people directly under or those that report to a manager/management. The question rises whether it is better to have a large span of control or a small span of control. There are pros and cons to each type of management and I’ve seen it done differently in different organizations. Big organizations that have the financial stability and correct hierarchy in place tend to use the smaller span of control this makes it so that there are a few responsible individuals that report to one director or leader. By organizing teams that work in this manner the company can complete an increased number of tasks, increase productivity, customer service and the company is able to achieve more goals. Down sides to small span of control are usually limited to the ability/competency of the employees within the team/group. This can be managed properly when hiring these individuals. Making sure that the right personnel are on the team is the jobs of the team manager/supervisor. As discussed in the
