he was born in pisa, tuscany. His family was an old florentine family. He was a sort of nobility with respectable and high status but they didn't have much money. His father was a court musician and a music theorists. He was a part of the group that invented italian opera. His father wanted galileo to be a physician. He was sent to the university of pisa to begin hi studies but was more interested in mathematics, literature and art. he was part of a young literary circle and was appointed a professor of mathematics. It was not that honorable, people just considered it a basic practice. While he was at pisa he was calling aristotelian natural philosophy into question. After a few year he moved to a better job at the university of padua near venice. He has a lot of contacts in venice. He is still within italy but they had a different dialect. There is a lot of evidence that he thought of himself as a tuscan. He was fairly successful mathematics professor in padua and was able to put together a life for himself. A university wasn't a good place for an antiaristotelian. He was required to teach the standard curriculum. The emerging sciences was largely outside the universities.
