Unformatted text preview: Mengheng Li Assignment #3 Jeff Schurman, CAE A man named Ting Xu in China was under arrested and accused of stealing from the financial institution. When Xu attempted to withdraw 100, he found the ATM machine spewed out 1000 times the money due to a bug in the system. Wild with joy, he took 175,000 out (about $25,000) from the ATM machine. Two years later when Xu was caught and arrested by the police, he was sentenced to life in prison. In this case, Xus action should not be punished as severely as it was because it was the bank that should be responsible for the mistake of the ATM machine rather than him. In addition, the bank had enough time to recover the money, but it did not take any action until two days later. As a result, the 175,000 could be viewed as the forgotten rather than the stolen.
