Levels of Organization Atom – made of protons, neutrons, and electrons, smallest unit Molecule – two or more joined atoms (i.e. carbohydrates, lipids, DNA, Cl 2 ) Cell – smallest unit of life that can live and reproduce on its own Tissue – organized array of cells and substances which interacts Organ – interaction of two or more tissues Organ system – organs interacting physically, chemically, or both Multi-celled organism – made up of different types of cells Population – group of single or multi-celled species Community – all populations of species Ecosystem – has inputs and outputs of energy and materials Biosphere – All regions of the earth, water is crucial to life In multi-cellular organisms, cells form tissues, organs, organ systems. B. Overview of Life’s Unity 1. Energy Flow of life goes from energy input (sun) to producers/consumers to energy output (heat) into environment Heat is released at each step Continuous flow 2. Senses and Response to change Receptors (molecules/structures) detect stimuli and change organisms’ activities
