Ch.43: Principles of Animal Reproduction and Development A. Sexual Reproduction -in sexual reproduction, gametes from two parents fuse and form the zygote while asexual reproduction only one parent produces offspring. -sexual reproduction require energy and resources in order to form and nurture gametes. Timing requires energy outlays to construct, maintain and use neural and hormonal control mechanisms in both parents. B. Stages of Reproduction and Development - There are six stages of animal reproduction and development. -gamete formation: eggs or sperm develop inside parental reproductive tissues or organs. -fertilization: the zygote forms when a sperm penetrates a mature egg and their nuclei fuse. -cleavage repeatedly cuts the fertilized egg by mitotic cell divisions and it is over when a bastula forms. (blastula’s cells are called blastomeres and they enclose the blasocoel) -In gastrulation, the cells reorganize themselves into a gastrula.(ecto, endo and mesoderms). -tissues and organs are formed in expected patterns in organ formation.
