SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT RULES 1. Singular subject - singular verb 2. Plural subject - plural verb 3. Prepositional phrase between subject and verb - Don’t go there! 4. “And” rule - Compound subjects joined by “and” = usually plural 5. Menu items - When one item (macaroni and cheese) – singular 6.  “Or”-“nor” rule = Make verb agree with closest subject to verb. 7. Most indefinite pronouns = singular anyone       anybody      anything     everyone    everybody    everything someone    somebody    something   no one nobody         nothing Notice the common endings.   ONE     BODY    THING = singular   8. Both, few, many and several = plural 9. All, some, any  and  fraction words - depend on meaning As a whole = singular Number of individuals = plural
