Has the Socratic Method- Seeking clarity and truth through penetrating questions and astute analysis. b. Socrates Ethos- The goal of life is to “Know thyself” and improve our souls through virtuous living. c. Took Heractlitus’s “One ought not to talk or act as if he were asleep” and characterized himself as “Gadfly;” an annoying biting insect. 2. Identify and analyze the main ideas of seven pre-Socratic philosophers: a. Thales - Supposedly the first philosopher. - Argued that the primary substance of the universe was water. -Came up with Gnomen: The Sun dial. -Is reality one or many; its one water. - Everything is made up of the same kind of stuff. -Things can be observed to change. Things are able to change from one kind of thing to another. b. Anaximenes - Held the belief that air is the one substance out of which the entire universe is formed. -When you compress air Gets cold Solid etc WRONG - His physics was backwards. - There must be some principle of change. - Air is the substance, compression, and rarefaction the principles of change. c. Heraclitus -Most influential. -Maintained that all things were in a constant state of flux and that the governing principle of the universe is what he called logos . -Everything is constantly changing, like
