AhmedsFramesExamples.ppt 3 6.1: Introduction to Frames and Framesets The Frame structure is an excellent tool to develop professional-look-like web pages. But the key issue is not to abuse this feature. You will need to restrain yourself on developing too many frames. A Good Reference Site: http://www.maconstateit.net/tutorials/XHTML/default.htm

AhmedsFramesExamples.ppt 4 In the Framed Web pages, we usually divide the browser’s window into several frames (also called panes). We can display different HTML document in different frames in the window.

AhmedsFramesExamples.ppt 5 The frame and frameset structure enables us to display more than one document simultaneously on various predefined panes of the browser’s screen. By the way, the pages at http://stmahmed2.st.utoledo.edu/AhmedsDemo/DemoHome.htm have been developed using Framesets.

AhmedsFramesExamples.ppt 6 Note: XHTML 1.1 does not support creating and using framesets . However, W3C has a XHTML1.0 (i.e. DTD) for framesets. We will be using the XHTML1.0 Frameset DTD to develop our frame sets. A different method is under development by the World Wide Web Consortium to permit opening multiple pages inside multiple frames within the main browser window; however, these standards are not yet finalized nor are these supported by today's browsers.

AhmedsFramesExamples.ppt 8 Tips and Motivations In a framed application, almost all of our documents are typical standard XHTML documents. So, we do not have to go beyond whatever we have learned so far in our class. We simply develop and test the documents individually. Then, if we decide to display more than one document on the browser’s screen at the same time, we will need to decide: ( see next slide… )

AhmedsFramesExamples.ppt 9 1. The number of frames and the structures of these frames, such as their sizes. 2. Which document should be displayed in which frame? 3. Finally, we need to develop a new document that will tell the browser to divide the screen in several frames (as decided in step 1) and display the documents in respective frames (as decided in step 2).
