1. The physical components are the sender, receiver, and transmission medium (or media). Conceptually, a channel also includes the communication protocol. 2. The components are subsidiary protocols for representing the content of data and commands, encoding and transmitting data (bits), channel organization, and communication coordination (clock synchronization and error detection and correction). 3.FM is an encoding method that varies carrier wave frequency to represent data. AM is an encoding method that varies carrier wave amplitude to represent data. Phase-shift modulation is an encoding method that varies carrier wave phase to represent data. FM, AM, and phase-shift modulation can represent analog or digital data. On-off keying is an encoding method that generates square waves by rapidly pulsing electrical or optical power. It’s used only for digital data and is essentially the digital equivalent of AM. 4. It increases the number of bits that can be encoded in a single signal event. Each doubling of the number of levels doubles the number of bits encoded in a signal event and, therefore, doubles the raw data transfer rate.
