Kin – March 9, 2010 What is Flexibility? The ability to move freely in every direction; and/or The ability to move though a full and normal range of motion “Full and Normal” range depends on the individual How you stretch is as important as that you stretch! Static Flexibility The range of motion around a joint(s) Movement or speed is not a factor Holding a stretch for a given amount of time No movement Dynamic Flexibility Range of motion during physical performance Involves speed, strength, power, neuromuscular coordination Ex: Soccer playing kicking really high (it is very quickly) Most sports have a huge dynamic component Excessive Flexibility Usually overstretched ligaments (from injury or performance) o You do not want to stretch a ligament Hyper-flexibility may decrease stability and increase risk of injury to joint Stretch Weakness Vulnerable to injury even during common daily activities Often seen with postural muscles that remain in prolonged periods of stretch or joints stretched repeatedly with poor technique Cumulative Trauma Many injuries result from repeated movements or static postures o Ex: lifting something heavy numerous times, and that final time you actually hurt your back The “incident” is often not the “cause” Neutral Posture Maintaining 3 natural curves of spine Common seated, standing postures? Key? Core Strength (transvere abdominus, rectus abdominis, Head stacked on top of your shoulders, shoulders over your hips, hips over your knees What is “neutral” during different activities? How do you learn to maintain neutral?
