KIN – March 23, 2010 Obesity Refers to a High Percentage of Body Fat 65 million people in the US are obese o BMI > 30 kg.m2 o Males > 25% fat? o Females > 30% fat? Obesity Trends 1990 o No state there is an obesity rate above 14% o 10 states had a prevalence of obesity less than 10% and no states had a prevalence equal to or greater than 15% 1995 o 15-19% category o By 1998, no state had a prevalence less than 10%, 7 states had a prevalence of obesity…. 2000 o Greater than 20% category 2005 o 25-29% category Louisiana, West Virginia 2030 o About 45% of men will be obese o Trends in females White: 47%, Black: 78%, Hispanic: in between In Texas o A little over 30% of all adults are obese? Since 1991, it has doubled (doesn’t matter what age/ethnic group we look at) By education level, generally people with the highest amount of education tend to have the least % of population as obese (although it has doubled since 1991) Projected Health Care Costs Due to Obesity for US adults 2010: about $100 billion dollars a year 2020: about $200 billion a year Why the Concern? Obesity is associated with an increased risk for over 30 diseases including o High blood pressure o Type 2 diabetes – over 80% are obese o Lipid abnormalities o Stroke
