Kin – March 25, 2010 What Causes Obesity Genetic Traits o Link poorly understood o Responsible genes unknown in >95% of cases o Main polygenic, with genetic variations creating susceptibility to environmental factors o Tremendous increase in obesity but the gene pool hasn’t changed o Pima Indians Pima Indians lived in AZ for centuries and were lean and healthy. Moved to reservation, stopped farming, and started eating a western high-fat diet and consuming alcohol. Prevalence of obesity now = 70% and high rate of type 2 diabetes. Pima Indians in Northern Mexico farm with no motorized equipment o Regional Fat Storage Site for body fat storage is genetically determined Many men store excess fat in the abdominal area (apple shaped) Most women store fat in the lower body (pear shaped) Not all fat is created equal Excess abdominal fat increases health risk o Visceral or deep adipose (no way to measure it besides cat scan or MRI) tissue increases risk more than subcutaneous adipose tissue (the fat around the outside of your stomach) Upper Body Fat Patterning Estimate by waist circumference o Higher risk: Men > 40 in Women > 35 in Personal Lifestyle o Energy Balance: Intake (# of calories we take in) = Output (# of calories we put out, physical activity) o The Energy Balance Equation Energy Balance Calories in = calories expended Maintain weight Positive Energy Imbalance Calories in > calories expended Gain weight Negative Energy Imbalance Calories in < calories expended
