Tian Chen Research paper ENGL102 11/28/11 How Chinese philosophy affected Japanese literature and American literature According to many literacy works, we can find out that philosophy always has close relation with literacy. In this research paper, the main idea is to compare literature work that is influenced by Zen Buddhism philosophy and concluded to the idea how Asian philosophy transmitted to American and affect American literature. Zen Buddhism is very important culture legacy in China and even in ancient Asia. My grandmother is Buddhism. She goes to temple regularly, sacrifice pork, fish, and fruit for goodness. But Zen Buddhism is not only a religion belief it is also the enrichment of Asian philosophy. According to the essay, "Zen Buddhism,” in Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History , it said “Zen teaches that enlightenment is achieved through the profound realization that one is already an enlightened being.” To my understanding, everyone is capable of enlightened by ancient wisdom, but you can only reach your enlightenment by figure out who you really are and what you truly want, and let go of all the rage from the outside world (Zen. 3). In the same essay it describe that Zen has an interesting historic development, “Zen was original from India and formalize in China. Then Zen was transmitted from China to Japan. And Zen took root in Japan in thirteenth century. It is not only the religion practice Buddhism was transmitted to japan, as well as Chinese literature, calligraphy, philosophy, and ink painting. transmitted to japan, American scholar Snyder came to japan, study Japanese culture and he introduced Zen to American. In 1960s, Zen is very popular among the beat generation. Quoted from a Brief Explanation by Eido Tai Shimano Roshi Abbot of The Zen Studies Society, “Zen is the special transmission of Zen is the realization of the Buddha's enlightenment itself, in one's own life, in one's own time (Eido.5).” Zen is the spirituals center, where you believed that you are the master of your life, not social status, not money, not grades, just who you really are. Zen helps people reach the inner peace when you are disturbed by the noises outside your heart. In Tang Dynasty, around 14 th central, China was a prosperous country, both economy and literature has reached the high peak. At that time, there are several poets who believe in Buddhism when they are getting old, and their poem reflects their beliefs in Zen Buddhism. They are tired of chase after higher social status or wealth. They were turning to Buddhism
