Midterm exam Eng102: western world literature Tian Chen 10/11/2011 Topic 3: How realistic is happily ever after ending? What should we do to live happily ever after in our society. Realism and fantasy We’ve always heard that princes and princesses will “live happily ever after” at the end of a fairy tale. Although most people know it is not real, they still want to believe in a fantasy. So they have something to count on when facing an imperfect world. In this paper, I want to compare the happy ever after ending to three story endings that are not very satisfactory to readers. The three stories are “Suicide Note,” “teenage wasteland” and “barn burning.” In “Suicide Notes,” an Asia American college student was reported to have jumped to her death from a dormitory window. In the “Teenage Wasteland,” Donny was running away from home. His parents continued looking for Donny. In the “Barn Burning,” Colonel Sartoris ran to the landlord to tell the white elite his father’s plan to burn down the barn and take his revenge.
