Midterm exam Eng102: western world literature Tian Chen 10/11/2011 Topic 3: how realistic is happily ever after ending? What should we do to live happily ever after in our society. Realism and fantasy We always heard “then prince and princess will live happily ever after” at the end of a fairy tale. Although most people know it is not realistic but they still want to believe in fantasy in order to have something to count on when facing the imperfect world. In this paper, I want to compare the happy ever after ending to three story endings that are not very satisfactory to readers. The three stories are “suicide note”, “teenage wasteland” and “barn burning”. In the suicide notes, an Asia American college student was reported to have jumped to her death from the dormitory window. In the teenage wasteland, Donny was run away from home. His parents still keep looking for Donny. In the barn burning, Colonel Sartoris, he ran to the landlord tell the white elite his father’s plan to burn down the barn to take his revenge.
