CHAPTER 3 – CULTURAL UNDERSTANDINGS OF EMOTIONS The construction of emotions in the West Romanticism – era in which emotions came to be valued. o Rosseau – credited with articulation of Romantic spirit. idea that religious sensibility is based on how you feel rather than on authority, or on scripture, or on arguments for the existence of G-d. o romantics were fascinated by the natural. o themes of romanticism from Frankenstein: settings amid wild scenery emphasis on the natural distrust of the artificial apprehension of humans arrogantly overstepping their boundaries The elements of a cultural approach to emotion theme of this chapter: o values, concepts, and ideas about the self as expressed in art forms, rituals, social practices and institutions shape how members of particular societies experience emotion, and that these matters are not universal. cultural approach to emotion: o 1 st assumption- that emotions are constructed primarily by the processes of culture. o 2 nd assumption – emotions can be thought of as roles that people fulfill to play out culture specific identities and relationships. The self-construal approach: independent and interdependent selves independent self-construal o individualism autonomous and separate from others. unique traits and preferences behavior caused by internal causes one’s own dispositions and preferences are stable across time and contexts. interdependent self o collectivism connected to other people roles and duties within the community behavior a result of social context self that varies, shifting and shaped by different contexts relationships and roles.
