Xenopus laevis (frog): development is independent but poor genetics. Large embryos, transplantation experiments. Mus musculus (Mouse): warm blooded, good genetics but development is in utero. Sequenced genome ~2,500Mb (~30,000 predicted genes) Drosophila (fruit fly): great genetics, rapid development (Nobel Prize to Lewis, Nusslein-Volhard & Wiechaus 1995). Sequenced genome ~160 Mb (13,767 genes)- textbook wrong says 20,000 (p.18) C elegans (nematode): has less than 1000 C. elegans (nematode): has less than 1000 cells and is transparent. Fast life cycle. Cell lineage, great genetics (3 Nobel Prizes: Brenner, Sulston, Hovitz 2002, Fire and Mello 2006, and Marty Chalfie et al. 2008) Sequenced genome ~100Mb (19,099 genes)
