Mendell Key Terms MicroRNAs (miRNAs) : small RNAs usually about 19-25 nucleotides long and functions to control gene expression by base pairing with many different mRNAs. 3’UTRs : 3’ untranslated regions of mRNA that falls between the coding region and the polyA tail. The 3’UTR is a site where miRNA interacts with mRNA to regulate gene expression. MYC (c-Myc) : a DNA binding transcription factor that controls gene expression through binding on enhancer box sequences as well as modifying chromatin by histone acetylation. Mutations of Myc are commonly found in cancer, causing unregulated expression of the genes involved in cell proliferation.
