Nixon Olivia Nixon Elizabeth Chamberlain English 134 4:10-5:00 26 September 2009 From Wastebasket to Success “The wastebasket is the writer’s best friend,” Isaac Bashevis Singer. Just like anything in life, writing has its ups and downs, its successes and failures; and my wastebasket sure has been full! Despite only obtaining an amateur status, my writing career has been filled with many ups and downs. Consequently, there came a point during my short life that my perspective, style, and thus my confidence in writing changed. To be a writer I thought perfection was the key but during my teenage years my view of writing and how to write was completely flipped upside down. Harder teachers, less free-time, longer classes, and more homework is what the faculty and staff promised us while we sat in the massive gymnasium for freshmen orientation at Del Oro High School. On the contrary, I did not experience this hell-like high school they spoke of as a freshman. During my first year of high school I was a 3-sport athlete and was involved in the leadership program while managing to maintain a 4.0 GPA. School was a breeze, as it had always been for me; however, there was one class in particular that seemed easier than usual. Mr. Hayward’s freshmen English class can be easily described in one phrase: “A waste of time!” Despite the fact that I hated writing and thought of myself as an average writer, Mr. Hayward
