English 149-01 MEMORANDUM Date: February 22, 2011 To: Mrs. Sherrie Amido From: Olivia Nixon Re: Findings on interview with LeAnn Wellington-Smith of TriContinent Scientific This memo summarizes as well as analyzes the interview conducted with LeAnn Wellington- Smith of TriContinent Scientific. I first contacted LeAnn through a family connection in order to receive advice about my personal education and career choices; I interviewed her on February 13 th , 2011 over the phone. Biography of Interviewee LeAnn Wellington-Smith currently works as a manufacturing engineer for TriContinent Scientific, Inc. in Grass Valley, CA. She graduated from Chico State with her BS in Mechanical Engineering and minor in Mathematics. She worked in the aerospace industry for several years before becoming a manufacturing engineer at TriContinent. She created designs in the past, but her role at TriContinent puts her in direct contact with manufacturing technicians, clients, and the products produced. LeAnn works with design engineers to transition designs into manufacturable processes, communicates with suppliers about materials, tests materials, writes procedures for manufacturing technicians, works with technicians on troubleshooting, and also deals directly with clients. TriContinent Scientific is a small company that specializes in producing components for the medical diagnostics and biotechnology industries relating specifically to liquid handling products. It is located in Grass Valley, a small city in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, but TriContinent is represented internationally through a sales force and a network of global distributors. TriContinent is ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) certified as well as an FDA registered manufacturer. Their products include OEM (original equipment manufacturer) syringe pumps, rotary valves, liquid handling robots, micro plate washers and dispensers, and a variety of pipettes. They work with fluids engineering and trying to create automated precision laboratories
