The United States is currently not an empire, however I do think it behaved as an empire during instances throughout our history Howard Zinn undoubtedly shows that from the beginning, this nation was founded as an empire. From the start, North America in general was founded on imperialistic values. Columbus discovered ‘America’ solely for the purpose of acquisition to gain access to natural resources present on these foreign lands. Zinn says the world at this time and during the beginnings of the United States “was a world of conquest , violence, hunger, exploitation” (p 10). From the very beginning of the Virginia settlement in Jamestown, characteristics of an empire were starting to form. These settlers could not live peacefully with the Indians, who were the original owners of the land, so they decided just to exterminate them (p 13). This type of violent takeover, for the acquisition of land, is characteristic of an empire. Not only did America begin as an empire, but it continued to expand as an empire, as can be seen in all instances of westward expansion. Zinn says in his narrative that “the white Americans were
