PHL 275: Introduction to Ethics Fall 2011 First Essay Due: October 19 Length: 5 – 6 pages, double-spaced, 12-pt. font in Times New Roman or  equivalent size Weight: 25% of overall mark Penalty for lateness: 3% per day including each day of the weekend Topics Choose  one  of the following questions: 1) Explain the difference between psychological egoism and ethical egoism.  How does Hobbes arrive at each conclusion? 2) Explain Preference-Hedonism, Success Theory and the differences between  them. How can these theories of self-interest be used to defend  psychological egoism? Does Hobbes rely on them at all in his argument for  psychological egoism? 3) How is virtue acquired, according to Aristotle? Why are some people unable  to fully develop the virtues? Is virtue sufficient for happiness? 4) Explain the doctrine of the mean using three virtues of character as  examples. How does Aristotle suggest we determine the right action in each  situation? What are the limitations of this method?
