Chapter 4 – Environments and Life Pages 78-98 Ecology à the study of factors that govern the distribution of organisms in a natural environment Niche à the way a species relates to its environment where a species lives depends on what kind of food it eats Life Habit à the way a species lives within its niche how it obtains food, reproduces and handles the environment around it Limiting Factors à physical or chemical conditions that keep a species from living in alternative environments. For example starfish must live in salt water, and cannot survive in fresh water Competition à species that share part of their environment with others have to compete for resources. Population à group of individual that belong to a species that live in a particular area together Ecological Community à Populations of several species that live in a particular area together. Must consist of photosynthesizing creatures, herbivores and carnivores. Ecosystem à ecological communities and the environments they live in. Flora and Fauna living together constitute a Biota. Food Chain à chain of species that feed on one another. Diversity à the term used to designate the number of species living in an environment. The diversity of environments with few resources is low. Opportunistic Species
