Paula Martins March 31, 2011 990297166 SOC 365 Prof. Whitehead Gender Relations Reflection on debate concerning women’s reproductive rights For this assignment I choose to have a discussion with my sister-in-law about women’s reproductive rights especially in the developing world. In particular, we discussed the practice of female genital mutilation. I currently feel that female genital is just that mutilation. An practice that should be considered a violation of women’s human rights and outlawed. I feel this way because women are not given a choice in this matter, but instead girls (between infancy and fifteen years old) are subject to a procedure for non-medical reasons that cause both short-term as well as long-term health consequences in addition to jeopardizing women’s reproductive freedom. In my discussion I argued for the importance of female genital mutilation and its role it plays in practicing cultures using the following subheadings. Cultural Relativism My argument began with the idea of cultural relativism. I argued that this practice has its value in these societies and can only be understood in that society. By living in
