RLG100Y1- Sep 22/10 - Marx o Younger contemporary of Feuerbach o Religion was a bought embossed of a continuing class struggle in society KEY FACTOR o Society, historically is characterize with endless struggle of classes o Religion is critical to the process of fending off serious revolution, serious and radical class struggle o “Man makes religion, religion does not make man. Religion is something for someone who hasn’t found himself, or has lost himself” o “Religion is the opium of the people” Society has used religion to keep the working class to keep them in their place, and to keep them quiet (e.g. you may not get what the elites get but you’ll receive it in your after life) o If your among the oppress class, all you can hope for is that the elites will help you - From about the mid20s on; scholars argued that they need to recognize what religious people need, belief, etc. Now, we aspire to balance the etic and emic (it was mainly etic before). -
