RLG100Y1- Sep 27/10 - Religion Have: 1. In general have several different characteristics, which apply differently in every religion. Also offers a certain understanding of the way the world works (worldview) 2. An experiential dimension: a profound experience that inspires all 3. A Mythic dimension: tells stories (origins of the world, certain characteristics, certain figures, history, etc.) 4. A doctrinal dimension: embrace certain articles of belief; certain things they assert with their belief (E.g. Buddhism- impermanent of everything, Christianity- the resurrection) 5. Ethical dimensions: certain values (e.g. Buddhism- 4 principles of being, Christianity- 10 commandments) 6. Ritual dimensions: big rituals marking changes, life stages, day to day rituals (e.g. pray times, weekly Shabbat) 7. Social dimensions: works to regulate behaviour in society. Principles that apply to relationship with society, and the state; have institutions (e.g. church)
