Executive Summary We cannot adopt the Massachusetts Health Reform model as it stands right now because it has certain limiting features that would work counterproductive to its goal. There is still a substantial amount of uninsured individuals who stands to be disadvantaged if we implement such a reform here in Georgia. According to the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, as of 2005 18.1% of Georgia residents are uninsured, a 1.2% increase over the 2004 total of 16.9%. single-payer health plan in the United States so that everyone would be afforded access to healthcare. The current “free-market” system we have is failing. These health insurance companies invest more than twice as much into marketing and administration than they do research and development. They are more concerned with making a buck than providing better health care. Health care should not be a business; rather it should be a human right. A 2002 US Census report showed that the number of uninsured Americans rose to 15.2% of the population – about 44 million people- a 2.5 million increase from the previous year. What I don’t understand is how is it that the United States spends twice as much on per capita health expenditures than other developed nations that provide health care to all its citizens, yet still has such a large number of people uninsured and an even greater number underinsured. Canada and the United Kingdom are some of the developed nations that do provide universal access to health care to its citizens. Both nations spend less than half of what the United States spends on health, yet boasts health results better than that of the United States. Even Cuba, a third world country, has better health results than the United States.
