Consumption Presentation - For middle class women, the department store was a source of pleasure, - An urban spectacle which displayed luxury items behind plate-glass windows which reflected the fantasies of the female consumer. -Going to a public place, especially a department store, gave women the impression that they could leave behind the stifling factory or kitchen. - Maybe even meet a rich man to sweep them away -Mannequins and female store workers also offered a sexual image that female consumers aspired to be -Industrialization turned everyday life into drag, created a repetitive existence which brought the same day to day occurrences. -Diversion was needed. People needed an escape or a change of pace. -Fortunately, Once women gained extra income from their jobs, due to the boom of the industrial revolution, this diversion came in the form of shopping. -To help support the new boom of department stores, the ambience of the large city inspired many people to consume beyond food and clothing; aspire to luxury. The people wanted to live the luxurious lives, and department stores helped facilitate this by granting them most of the luxuries needed. -Women attempted to meet their growing expectations through the purchase of household furnishing, ready-made clothes, perfumes, handbags, etc. -These new desires caused all sorts of women into the heart of the city, facilitating
