The physical environment was the principal determining factor of variation. The diffusion of ideas through human migration is more important. Franz Boas (1858-1942) o “We learn about cultures, societies and peoples’ biology via direct observation and careful attention to detail” o Laid the foundation for scientific anthropology relying on the scientific method with the collection of evidence. Races were being identified by skin color, facial type, cranial profile and even the color of your hair. Used to reflect group differences in character and intelligence.
