Chapter 3: Classical Conditioning Drug Tolerance Decreased effectiveness of a drug that is observed over  the course of repeated administration Why in novel environment is there  overdose?  Drug effects have never been experienced in  new environment so usual cues absent, usual  physiological response that helped to  counteract the drug effect was not triggered,  exposing the patient to the full respiratory  depressive effects of the drug. Learning Basic conditioning process Refers to a relatively enduring change in an organism's  behaviour, capabilities or knowledge due to experience experience. ..ideas. ..adaptive interactions with  environment. .. associations (layers). .. learning 3 concepts: a change in behaviour,  capabilities or knowledge (you wear an  oven mitt when grabbing hot pan), change is  relatively enduring (you learn  snowboarding, let it go, pick it up quicker at  a later time), a process based on experience  (aspects of behaviour can be changed  through experience such as language) Classical  Conditioning Understand/learn relationships between stimuli and  events in the environment Instrumental  Conditioning Goal-directed learning (example: lightning and thunder) Habituation Simple form of learning that shows decrease in response  to a stimulus or event as it becomes familiar Stimulus is modestly intense and takes place in widely  Works to limit orienting response and  ignore inputs that have become familiar,  keeps focus on new stimuli that hasn’t been  1
