Can get info from splitting patterns observed n+1 rule. Hydrogen has n protons that are non equivalent to it but equivalent to each other on the same or adjacent atom, its signal will be split, in n+1 peaks. Example. The nmr for trichloroethanewas 8. Triple then doublet on spectrum. What give rise to the splitting is ha and hb will split each other or in other words talk to each other through their magnetic fields. So any protons that are on adjacent carbons (drawing)any vicinal protons that are non equivalent will talk to each other. Ok so what causes the splitting? Well hb is in this chemical environment and is in this magnetic field and ha can affect how it reacts to that. In hb the mag field of ha will be added and subtracted from the induced magnetic
