Mexican Chicago The Importance of Mexican Chicago Chicago has a unique history of attracting large numbers of immigrants, including Mexicans Chicago is the 2nd largest urban population of Mexicans in the country (1.1 million) Second only to Los Angeles Chicago represents the history of a large Mexican community outside the U.S. Southwest

The History of Mexican Chicago Chicago attracted Mexican immigrants because of the industrial jobs available By 1907 Mexicans were already employed on Chicago railroads By 1916 (during WW I), Mexican population grew when they were enlisted as a reserve labor supply to alleviate U.S. labor shortage Strikes in 1919, Mexicans and African Americans were used as strikebreakers in steel, meatpacking and railroads
