Homework #1 Y o u r N a m e : Due on Friday, October 7, before the lecture. Only two problems will be graded explicitly. The last problem is optional, but your answer to it will be greatly appreciated. 1) de Broglie Wavelength The idea of the wave-particle duality of Light is a direct result of the fact that light appears to have both particle like and wave-like properties. Louis de Broglie took this idea one step further and postulated that all matter might also display wave like properties. Calculate the de Broglie wavelength of a 2 oz. tennis ball traveling at a speed of 135 mph (remember to convert all units to SI, before doing calculations). After studying the electromagnetic spectrum, comment on the magnitude of your calculated wavelength, as compared to the wavelengths seen on the EM spectrum. 2) Photoelectric Effect The ejection of electrons from a metal surface by radiation is known as the photoelectric effect.
