--The Igorots Are from Bulosan's "America is in the Heart." They are the native people in the Philippines and walk around naked. Bulosan pretends to be one during the World Fair so tourists will take pictures of him for money. By comparing himself with them he places himself on bottom of a racial hierarchy. From this place on the bottom he questions the legitimacy of race as a category to distinguish people because he passes off as one of them. Bulosan introduces the Igorots for three reasons: 1. He can present himself as radically other. 2. By comparing himself with them, he places himself on the bottom of a racial hierarchy, a comfortable perch from there he can criticize the problem with race 3. From this place on the bottom, he questions the legitimacy of race as category to distinguish people. --Realism Accepting the facts of life and favoring practicality and literal truth. Judges good and bad neutrally. --Social Realism
