Unformatted text preview: Europe-chapter 8? 14:54 Idea of Continent Defined by EU, EU shares the landmass with Asia but they are separate Mediterranean separated Africa and EU Early definitions of continent were cultural to distinguish themselves EU-based more on culture, language, religion rather than physical geog Physical EU Landforms Lowlands Northern EU plain (western france along the coast to finland) Easy to cultivate, not too mountainous, relativelycharlie flat Lots of military activity Important for transportation of people and goods Highlands Alps Series of chains: Pyrenees, Apenines, calpathians, deneric alps Highest peaks are over 10 thousand feet Reduced trade/communication created barriers that later became offical boundaries for countries Central uplands of South France Older mountains, no high peaks, skirts around the alps Rich deposits in coal and iron ore (raw materials in early industrialization) Western Highlands Backbones of Scotland, Iceland, Norway, and most of spain Massive glaciers during the last ice age Also have iron ore Little soil, poor agriculture Waterbodies Seas Mediterranean Sea Almost completely closed water body= small tidal change so no giant wetlands, lots of salt, subject to serious pollution, lots of shipping Baltic Sea Also somewhat enclosed, lots of vikings, freezes over much of the year, low salt content and little evaporation Eutrophication- environmental problem, release of agricultural chemicals washed into the sea create lots of algae and little fish life North Sea Open water body, cold, more salt because its connected to Atlantic, great winter storms Lots of oil and heavy winds, Denmark uses a lot of this wind energy Rivers Thames-Developed Southern England out to north sea Seine- runs through Paris, canals that connect to the coast Rhine- Drains from the Alps through Switzerland and Netherlands Elbe- through Czech Republic and Germany Danube- eastern Europe, important for transportation towards the black sea Climates (know annual rainfall) Humid Continental Cool Summer (eastern EU) Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania Good for growing things, not too much snow, Varying temp Marine West Coast (western EU) Consistent rain throughout the year, lots of moist air from the coast Narrower range of temperatures, moderate summer Mediterranean Dry Summer (Southern EU) Little rain during the summer, lots during the winter Different kinds of crops ie grapes, olive oil, wheat Climate Change in EU Build up of greenhouse gases: CO2, Methane, (creates gradual increase of temp) Caused by creating of fossil fuels, and deforestation More powerful and frequent storms...
