25 October 2011 Genre Genre – a criteria that unites a group of movies o United by subject matter, theme, characters, conflicts, mood, atmosphere, setting o Issues of content (what is inside a movie) as opposed to form Myth Conventions o Dancing – musicals o Special Effects – science fiction Iconography o 6 gallon hat – western o Rocket to the moon – science fiction 3 Basic Genres o Tragedy Man trying to grasp the infinite Age of man as not determining, but being determined Man as antihero Does not exist any longer Metaphysical genre Theological A religious people is required for tragedy Convention arouses fear, pity, doubt We don’t want that Want to be uplifted o Comedy Man being finite Plot and character are exaggerated Distance the audience o Can’t get caught up in characters Dialogue Must be well written Pace is necessary o Melodrama Everything other than tragedy and comedy Typical situations and actions
