NOTES FROM DISCUSSION Alan Tratner: earth-day founder Warren Brush: cuyama valley(agricultural, water-supply, etc.) Carolee Krieger: founder of California water impact network Scott Slater: farming and pipeline background California water law and policy (environmentalist and capitalist) What is preventing the global population from access to clean water? Tratner: environmental capitalist. Bring water to developing countries by using technological advancements of today and tomorrow. Make water more efficient. Do so while still sustaining economical development. Brush: water problems began with people messing with natural watershed. Need to learn how to manage naturall recources. Use technology to mimic natural water cycles that have worked throughout history. Krieger: must be careful about what free market means. Privatization is a problem. If water becomes a commodity/goes to the highest bidder, same problems arise for the poor. Slater: the human right to water…… at what cost? Environmental cost? Social cost? Must think about what these damnings and pumpings are doing to the places they come from/go to. More important to be responsible with the water than how you actually use it Tratner: Out-pacing the earth. Not just us who needs water… everything on earth needs it. Should there be mandates to regulate agricultural water supply? Brush: keyline. agriculture takes up 80% of water. Find ecologically sensible farmers and get your food from them. Organic doesn’t mean sustainable Krieger: we need to grow certain things in places where they will thrive and have less of
