BIO 335 Frog Cardiovascular Experiment Guidelines 1 Guidelines for Full Report on Frog Cardiovascular Experiments I. SUMMARY (20 Points) Write a short (125-200 words) statement of the experimental aims, methods and conclusions. II. INTRODUCTION III. MATERIALS AND METHODS (10 points) State the frog species. Were the frogs anesthetized and rendered insensate? Do not repeat the Material and Methods in the text of your report. Just state that the procedures that were followed were those outlined in the Lab manual. Give a Blackboard citation. Specifically mention any procedures implemented that deviated from the recommended protocols. You were instructed to ‘remove’ the pericardial sac surrounding the heart. Mention the effects of this on ventricular volume. You were instructed to keep the in situ frog heart moist with Frog Ringer s. State the chemical constituents in Frog Ringers and their respective gram weights/liter. Why use Frog Ringer s instead of distilled water? What is the anticipated pH? IV. RESULTS (100 points) Exercise 1: ECG Recordings and Graphical Analysis Present records showing the ECG for Leads I and II. For each Lead state the following: (1) the amplitude of the R wave, (2) the duration of electrical atrial depolarization, (3) approximate duration of electrical AV delay, (4) duration of electrical ventricular depolarization, and (5) duration of electrical ventricular repolarization. Using the printed records for ECG Leads I and II construct a graphical analysis, using the peak of the R wave, to determine the orientation and magnitude of the equivalent electrical vector. Determine the mean electrical axis for your preparation and state whether the angle approximately matches the in situ angle of the apex of the frog ventricle in your preparation (horizontal is parallel to the right and left shoulders, and positive value are clockwise.)
