One of these is the avoidance of special privileges which are given to some persons but not to others. Another one is the necessity of taking into account the long- range interests of people rather than immediate satisfactions. Finally, it is the effect of a given policy toward meeting the needs of society as a whole insofar as this can be determined in advance that is the objective of the virtue of justice. Much of the disputation that has occurred in philosophical writings has been due either to ambiguity or vagueness in the use of words.
