What is the difference between an oncogene and a proto-oncogene? Oncogene=gene that has mutated to cause cancerous growth Proto oncogene=gene that when mutated would cause cancerous growth Difference is whether it is already mutated or not We have tons of proto oncogenes (mainly involved in growth and proliferation pathways) that if mutated would cause cancer, but in most of us haven’t yet

Why is the term trophic factor a better description than growth factor for NGF? Growth factor assumes that it is helping the cells grow and divide. Trophic factor fits better because NGF doesn’t stimulate neurons to proliferate, just supports the survival of the already present neurons.
