Patrick Kennedy History of Europe Response Paper 2 Charlemagne ruled the West capriciously while orchestrating a revival of the importance of education; in addition he developed the idea of a centralized government which also highlighted his legacy. His political and social impact was felt throughout his legacy and for hundreds of years after. By educating the people and centralizing the government Charlemagne helped restore the imperial idea in the West, which was previously on the back burner. His legacy is also entwined with the Carolingian Renaissance, which was the revival of art, religion, and culture throughout the Empire. Although Charlemagne learned to read as an adult, he administered a revival of literacy and education throughout the empire. He implemented plans requiring children to be educated and aimed to improve the literacy rate of the Empire. He felt that if the people were more intelligent and educated it would make for a better Empire as a whole. Charlemagne increased literacy tremendously during his time, which translated into the
