Unformatted text preview: AMS 210: Applied Linear Algebra Fall 2009 September 17, 2009 AMS 210 Topics Today Problem Set 3 First Midterm Rounding Matrix Multiplication Graphs 01 Matrices AMS 210 Problem Set 3 This weeks problem set is due next Thursday, September 24. Read sections 2.2 and 2.3. Exercises: 2.2: 3ae, 4a, 9, 10, 13, 14, 20, 21, 22, 25b, 27, 30ab; 2.3: 1a, 2a, 3a Show work. AMS 210 First Midterm October 6, 3:50pm to 5:10pm (the class period). Will be a review lecture. Preparation materials coming soon. AMS 210 Rounding and Significant Digits Lots of questions about rounding multiple iterations of linear models. At least two somewhat distinct issues: numerical loss of precision and constrained model semantics. Loss of precision due to reentering truncated/rounded/etc model outputs as inputs. Technical issue. Model semantics involve many of the constraints weve discussed. Conceptual issue. AMS 210 Loss of Precision Basic scenario: model output is 3.24252145, most decimal digits look insigificant, reenter as 3.2 for next round. Not that bad for a single round, but errors can accumulate, especially if rounding always occurs in one direction (truncating positive numbers)....
